2020 Conference Cancelled

Given the World Health Organization’s announcement of a pandemic, we have determined to move forward with an abundance of caution. ISC/SCI is cancelling this year’s conference.

We have no plans to hold any online presentations, but intend to hold the conference next year in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Planning for next year’s conference—which we hope to be similar to what we had planned for this year—will start again in September, 2020.

If you registered for the conference, your fees will be refunded to you over the next week. If you do not receive a notice about your refund by March 25, please contact treasurer@indexers.ca.

We are sad and disappointed to announce this, but hope that everyone stays safe and well and comes to see us next year in Newfoundland!

National Indexing Day

Congratulations to the Society of Indexers on organizing their fourth annual National Indexing Day on March 31. They are holding a half-day conference on book indexing that will be of interest to editors and anyone else in the publishing industry.

ISC/SCI announces new bursary for diversity

The Indexing Society of Canada / Société  canadienne d’indexation (ISC/SCI) has announced its Diversity in Canadian Publishing Bursary.

This bursary is part of the ISC/SCI’s special program to contribute to filling a proven lack of diverse voices and the demand for them in the Canadian publishing industry by helping to achieve equality of opportunity for aspiring indexers belonging to underrepresented and/or marginalized groups.

The application deadline for the 2020 bursary is April 1. It will be granted to one person and will cover fees for an approved indexing program, two years of ISC/SCI membership with listing, and entry into the Mary Newberry Mentorship program.

Conference Registration Now Open

The annual ISC/SCI conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland is now open for Early Bird registration.
The conference will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 12 – 13.

Take advantage of these early bird rates until April 30:

  • Members (including ASI, ANSZI, SI, all other affiliates and Editors Canada): $290 for full two-day conference, $155 for one day
  • Non-members: $330 for two-day conference, $200 for one day
  • Special rate for eligible full-time students: $155 for the two-day conference and $85 for one day.

On Sunday we have two half-day workshops: “Index Manager” with Katharina Munk ($75) and “Live Indexing” with Kate Mertes ($75).

On Thursday, we have a special event for new indexers—the Fireside Chat with Stephen Ullstrom and Margaret De Boer. It’s free.

Later on Thursday, join us on the Iceberg Quest boat tour for $63 plus 15% sales tax. (Please register before April 11.)

Conference guests include keynote speaker Mary Norris (author and New Yorker magazine copyeditor), Jenny Higgins (Wikipedian-in-Residence at Memorial University) and Colleen Field (Centre for Newfoundland Studies) on periodical databases.

2020 Conference: June 12-13, St. John’s, Newfoundland

The ISC/SCI is thrilled to announce that our next annual conference is taking place on June 12-13, 2020 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The reason why we’re so excited is because Newfoundland is like no other place in the world. Ask any Canadian mainlander about Newfoundland, and it’s either on their list of places to visit, or they dream of going back.

What’s the draw? Number one might be the legendary hospitality of the Newfoundlanders and the unique and robust culture—Newfoundland English even has its own dictionary. There’s also the art, the music, and the picturesque fishing villages and colourful houses. And, of course, there’s the dramatic scenery and spectacular wildlife on and around this island that is so far east into the Atlantic that it was once home to Vikings.
