November Central Region Meeting

28 November 2020 @ 2:00 pm 4:00 pm EST

Most of the meeting will focus on problematic indexes. Recently on the IDG list there was a review of a book that would really have been improved by a good index. Here’s the short form with the link.

Influential public health intellectual Marion Nestle reviewed food writer Harold McGee’s new book on her blog today. https://www.foodpolitics.com/2020/11/weekend-reading-well-browsing-harold-mcgees-nose-dive/   After Nestle calls Nose Dive: A Field Guide to the World’s Smells (Penguin Press, 2020) “astonishing” and “life-changing” and “brilliantly designed with elegant charts, key terms in bold, and chemical structures (yes!) right next to the terms in miniature on a light grey background, set off from the text but right there where they are needed” – she then calls out the index and Penguin Press.

So this month let’s take a deeper look at indexes that need help. What’s really wrong with them? How would we approach this content? To get us started, I’ve attached the indexes from Margaret from two Dutch cookbooks that do nothing to make the cookbooks usable.

Please look around your bookshelves or your experience, and send any that you think need help. If you can copy or scan the pages we can show them on Zoom and discuss. The index might also be on Amazon’s Look Inside feature.

As usual, please bring any questions or concerns. I’ll also report quickly on the Executive meeting, especially on the plans for webinars and the conference.
